Sacred Heart Extended Care established in 2008, exists for the benefit of parents who need to place their children in a child care program. The center is a not-for-profit registered ministry of Sacred Heart Church. The program is designed for daily participation in activities appropriate to the child’s age that stimulate the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional developmental needs of the child. It is organized in a manner that creates a balance between stimulation and relaxation; active play and quiet time and rest; and individual, small, and large group activities.
Preschoolers learn best in a concrete, play-oriented environment. The curriculum is play-based. The Foundations to the Indiana Academic Standards for Young Children from Birth to Age 5 developed by the Indiana Department of Education defines what, why, and how to teach designated content and skills appropriate for young children. It means children learn best through play, hands-on-experiences, and exploration rather than lecture or drill.
Effective, quality programs for young children:
All of these strategies need to be used in the context of play and adult centered activities in which children are actively engaged and responsive. Recognition must also be given to the fact that children learn from each other and from interactions with the physical environment. Children at play are actively involved in creating themes; exploring and establishing environments; solving problems, and developing shared understandings.
The After School Program is under the direction of the Sacred Heart Extended Care Director, and staffed by persons qualified in child care. It is our aim to help each child grow in maturity and self-respect, as well as to maintain an atmosphere wherein respect and understanding for others is realized.
Indoor and outdoor activities are planned to complement the philosophy and value systems of the school and family. Arts and craft projects, and games and recreation are just a few of the planned activities. There is time set aside for homework completion, with tutorial help and resource materials available.
The After Care Program is open from 6:30 am – 7:15 am for parents who need care before school and 2:45pm – 6:00pm each school day. It is also open from 6:30am – 6:00pm when school is not in session.
